The family of Emil “Bud” Paape requests your prayers as they mourn his death. Bud is the uncle-in-law of Ann Merchlewitz, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, and great-uncle of Emily Merchlewitz Hoff ’10. Bud graduated from Saint Mary’s in 1962 and then served in Nigeria as a math and history teacher through the United States Peace Corps. He worked at Totino-Grace High School in Fridley, MN from 1968 to 1987 and again from 1989 to 1999. In 1987, he took a two-year leave of absence from Totino-Grace to go to Casablanca, Morocco – again with the Peace Corps. After decades of being a beloved teacher, in 1996 Bud was named Teacher of the Year by the Archdiocese of Saint Paul. After his retirement from Totino-Grace, he worked part-time at the Schools of Graduate and Professional Programs for over twenty years as a Program Assistant for the MA in Education-Wisconsin program. According to his SGPP colleagues, he was the spirit and heart of that small, yet mission-focused, program – bringing education to underserved groups.
Totino-Grace will host a Memorial Service on March 26th at 3:00 pm in the theater. Campus Ministry there will prepare readings and music to accompany open mic time. The prayer service will be followed by a reception in the commons. All are welcome.
