Hello Cardinals,

So many faculty and staff have expressed how energized they feel now that you are back on campus. On behalf of the entire Saint Mary’s community, we couldn’t agree more. Your arrival is a highlight of the year, and we are incredibly grateful to have you here. You bring out the best in our community thanks to your vibrancy, inquisitiveness, open hearts and minds, and desire to contribute, grow, lead, and serve.

We want to make sure you feel welcome here at Saint Mary’s and surrounded by a supportive and inclusive community including faculty, staff, coaches, and your fellow students. Our newest members of the Saint Mary’s community, our freshman class, joined together for a dinner on Saturday, Aug. 27. Father Burns remarks may be of interest to the entire student body.

We hope you are settling into your residence halls, adjusting to your new class schedules, taking part in the social scene, and enjoying this start of the school year. We want to remind you to take full advantage of this week’s Activities Fair (Aug. 31 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the plaza). It is always a great idea to try something new or different, of which there is plenty to offer. In fact, Saint Mary’s University’s Student Activities Committee (SAC) was recently recognized by the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) for its work in keeping students connected, entertained, and active.

Another thing to consider is getting to know your student senate representatives, who are there to take your questions, listen to your ideas and concerns, and share them with administration. They were elected by the student body to represent you. You may even be interested in getting involved this year, if you haven’t already as the student senate will be holding elections for various senator positions (e.g. hall representative, class officers). Among the student senate executive board are Sophia Cave, vice president of multicultural affairs, and Katie Pierpont, vice president of student affairs.

If you ever have questions, issues, or concerns, we want to hear from you. You can stop by Vlanzy 105 or send a note to Residence Life or Student Affairs.

Check out the inclusion and human dignity resource page to learn more about our philosophy or to get involved: https://inclusion.smumn.edu/teaching-resources/.

With so much going on and so much to learn and do, we want you to take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and know we care for you. Here’s to a wonderful year of learning and growth.
