Per Advocates for Minnesota Student Aid, “… lawmakers ended their work in St. Paul in May without taking action to address a $131 million deficit in the State Grant program. Almost half of Minnesota college students receive these grants, which will now be cut significantly starting this fall.”
The Minnesota State Grant program provides need-based aid to Minnesota college students, helping thousands from low- and middle-income families attend the college of their choice. It is available to students seeking an undergraduate degree.
This year, the program had a $131 nillion deficit. More than 88,000 students at Minnesota’s private and public colleges and universities received Minnesota State Grant awards in 2026-2027. Approximately 18,000 students will lose their grants entirely as a result of the legislature’s failure to act. The remaining 70,000 students will see their grants reduced by more than 30%. These cuts will be devastating for our students who receive the State Grant. Please watch for future opportunities to advocate for this program and our students.
