The time has come. It is the final week of the regular season here for our spring sports.

TRACK & FIELD IN ST. PAUL

It was a hectic weekend for the Cardinal track and field team. The squad was split between three different meets across two states. The women’s 4x100m relay team competed at the prestigious Drake Relays and came in 16th in a field of over 50 teams across all divisions. Freshman Gage Hatch highlighted the weekend with a dominant showing at Macalester, capturing two individual titles. He sprinted to a personal-best 11.05 in the 100m before doubling back to win the 200m in another PR time of 22.16. Hatch also played a key role on the Cardinals’ 4×100 relay team, which raced to a first-place finish in 43.02.

Due to graduation this Saturday, the Saint Mary’s track and field program had to shuffle around their final meets. They will now compete at the Meet of the Unsaintly, hosted by Hamline, this Friday, May 1 starting at 5:00 p.m.

The MIAC Outdoor Championships will be held next weekend at St. Olaf.

BASEBALL TO PLAY CARLETON

It was a busy week of games for the Saint Mary’s baseball team (22-15, 10-8 MIAC), playing six battles across the conference. The team closed out their six game week 3-3, splitting their series with each of their opponents: Concordia, Gustavus Adolphus, and St. Olaf.

The team closed out their home schedule this weekend in dramatic fashion with a special senior day walk off. In the second game of the St. Olaf doubleheader, the Cardinals, down one at the bottom of the ninth, got two guys on first and second early and a walkoff by sophomore Dom Najacht pushed the Cardinals past the Oles to finish the game ahead 3-2.

Earning that series split mattered in the long run for a postseason berth as the Cardinals stayed in the running of fourth in the conference ahead of their final regular season game this Friday.

On May 1, the team will close out their regular seasons at Carleton for a doubleheader and a chance to make a playoff run for the first time since 2021 where they won the conference title.

SOFTBALL REGULAR SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE

It was a busy eight game week for the No. 3 softball team (33-5, 18-2 MIAC). The team kicked off their week last Tuesday, playing to a pair of five-inning shutouts in the final home game of the season against Hamline.

Peyton Berg made headlines against the Pipers as she hit a three run homerun that put her in the record books for the program record of career RBI’s. Surpassing the 153 career RBI’s set by Jill Hocking in 2001.

The Cardinals turned around and dropped their first game to the UW-La Crosse Eagles to an extra inning thriller, 1-0, which capped their 17 game win streak. They bounced back to capture game two 4-0.

That was their final non-conference game of the season. They turned the page to face a tough Saint Benedict team where they dropped the series in St. Joseph for their first conference loss since April 23 of the 2024 season.

Again, it is a resilient group as the team bounced back once more to a pair of wins and shutouts at Bethel on Sunday and it was highlighted by two monster home runs for junior Megan McGinnis who went 4-for-4 from the plate in game one.

This week, they face their attention to a tough Macalester squad on Friday, May 1 for a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m. The Cardinals currently sit in second in the conference, behind the Bennies, and need a series sweep plus a loss or two by the Bennies to reclaim their first place finish.

Stay tuned for any and all postseason action! Go Cardinals!
