Dear Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota Community,

Here is a brief write-up about Sister Michaela’s visit:

Sister Michaela Serpa FSE visited Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota last week. In addition to her two presentations (one at SGPP and one on our Winona Campus) she was also able to engage with our DNP class of 2027 in Brother Louis Hall (see attached photo) and with an undergraduate Health Care Ethics class (see attached photo). The undergraduate students discussed Triage Protocol for the COVID-19 Pandemic– an article written by the Yale-New Haven Health System when Sister Michaela sat on the Ethics Committee at Yale-New Haven Hospital.

On the Minneapolis Campus, Sister Michaela spoke about different theories in medical ethics and incorporating the Catholic perspective when addressing ethical dilemmas. Sister Michaela discussed challenges in healthcare access and care for the poor, and used case studies to facilitate discussion about the application of ethical principles to common ethical dilemmas faced in healthcare.

On the Winona Campus, Sister Michaela explored the concepts of ethics, morals, freedom, and conscience within healthcare and focused on access to healthcare with a particular attention to drug cost.

Sister Michaela is an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice at Idaho State University, Pocatello, ID. She is licensed to practice pharmacy in three states, is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist, a member several professional organizations including the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), and the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP) where she serves on the Ethics in Pharmacy Committee.

If you are interested in viewing Sister Michaela’s presentation either on the Winona campus or the Minneapolis campus, the recording will be available for two weeks beginning today:
