Winter break begins on Tuesday, December 19. 2023. During scheduled university breaks, the residence halls/villages/apartments are officially closed and students must leave campus by 7:00 p.m. on that date. Halls will reopen on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at noon.
Residents are required to complete a break checkout form in eRezLife prior to leaving campus. The form will be open on Friday, December 15, 2023 and close on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.
For this break, all dorm-size refrigerators must be unplugged, thawed and propped open. All perishable food items must be taken home, donated to the food pantry, or thrown away prior to leaving. All full-size refrigerators in apartments/villages will stay plugged in. Any food in community refrigerators this is not labeled or appears old will be thrown away during break.
Residence hall staff will check student rooms during break periods to ensure that no safety hazards exist and that break protocols were followed. If a staff member should encounter a violation of break protocols, or a resident residing in the residence halls without authorization, the resident may receive a fine and/or loss of campus housing.
If you need on-campus housing between Tuesday, December 19, 2023 after 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 7, 2024 before noon you must request and be approved to stay on-campus. Please email reslife@smumn.edu for the break housing form to stay on campus for break. Key cards will be turned off during break and you will not have access to your residence halls after 7:00 p.m. on December 19 and before noon on January 7 if you do not complete this form.
The break housing form needs to be completed by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 18, 2023. If you do not register by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 18, a $10 late fee will be added to your student account. This includes international students and student teachers. If your request is denied, you will be contacted by the Office of Residence Life. If you do not receive a response, your request has been approved.
Only those students who will be participating in SAINT MARY’S SPONSORED activities, traveling long distances (over 8 hours) or international students will be granted break housing unless specifically approved by the Office of Residence Life. A $35 per night fee may be added to a student account for remaining on campus for reasons other than those stated above.
Food service will not be available. The cafeteria will close at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19, and the Cardinal Club will close at 5:00 p.m. on the same date. The cafeteria will reopen on Sunday, January 7, for dinner.
