If you need on-campus housing between Tuesday, December 16, 2025 (after 7pm) and Sunday, January 4, 2026 (before noon) you must request and be approved to stay on-campus. This includes international students, student-athletes and student teachers. If your request is denied, you will be contacted by the Office of Residence Life. If you do not receive a response, your request has been approved. If you need the form to request to stay, please email reslife@smumn.edu.
During scheduled university breaks, the residence halls/villages/apartments are officially CLOSED and students must leave for winter break by 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. Residence halls will reopen on Sunday, January 4, 2026 at 12:00 p.m.
Only those students who will be participating in SAINT MARY’S SPONSORED activities, traveling distances over 500 miles or international students will be granted break housing, unless specifically approved by the Office of Residence Life. A $35 per night fee may be added to a student account for remaining on campus for reasons other than those stated above.
The form must be completed by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 15, 2024. Failure to register by the deadline will result in a $25.00 late fee added to your student account. Key card access will be shut off at 7:00 p.m. on December 16, 2025 and will not be turned back on until 12:00 p.m. on January 4, 2026.
Residence hall staff will check student rooms during breaks for safety hazards exist or make sure there are not any violations of university policy. Any violation may result in additional fines or other sanctions. If a staff member should encounter a resident residing in the residence halls without authorization, the resident may receive a fine and/or loss of campus housing.
All dorm-size refrigerators must be unplugged, thawed and propped open for this break. A fine will be issued for all dorm-size refrigerators that are not emptied, thawed and unplugged. All full-size refrigerators in villages and apartments should remain plugged in, but will be checked for any food that will expire over break. Please consider donating any unopened food items to the Cardinal Co-op food pantry. Please contact your RA or HD to donate.
If you have food in common area refrigerators, please remove it before break begins. All food not labeled or that appears old will be subject to disposal.
Food service will not be available. The cafeteria will close at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 16, 2025 and the Cardinal Club will close at 5 p.m. on the same date. Food service will reopen on Sunday, January 4, 2026, for dinner.
The Cardinal Co-op food pantry will be open from 8:00 am. until 4:00 p.m. beginning on the first full day of break for those staying on campus. The food pantry is located in Griffin Hall #199.
