Calling all faculty advisers! Advising season kicks off on Monday, October 28th! The Student Success Center is here to help and support you, and your students, through a successful registration. Below, you will find some frequently asked questions and resources that will aid in your advising sessions the next few weeks.
Advising Resource Tables
There will be three advising resources tables available to students and faculty located on the second floor of Aquinas Hall , the first floor of Saint Mary’s Hall, and in Toner Student Center. Resource tables will include paper copies of the following resources:
- General Education Tracking Form
- Integratus Tracking Form
- Four Year Scheduling Grids
- Daily Scheduling Grids
- How to Register for Classes on the Nest
- How to Clear Holds
- Graduation Requirements Worksheet
- 2024-2025 Majors and Minors
All students require registration clearance from their adviser!
As the adviser, you are responsible for clearing all students on your advising roster. It is recommended that you clear each student after meeting with them for their advising appointment. This ensures that each student has had a touch point with their advisor, ultimately impacting their positive experience and retention here at Saint Mary’s. Instructions on how to clear a student for registration can be found on this document.

You will access your advising roster through J1 Web in the advising hub. Please follow the instructions on this document to navigate to your advising roster.
What if my advising roster is missing a student?
If you believe that you are missing a student on your advising roster, please email the Office of Advising (advising@smumn.edu) with the first and last name of the student you believe to be missing. In collaboration with the registrar, the Office of Advising will confirm if the student belongs on your roster and when you can anticipate your roster being updated.
How do I view the course offering for Spring 2025?
The course offering for Spring 2025 is located in the Nest. Instructions on viewing the course offering can be found on this document.
Do I have to meet with every student, especially if I know they already have a schedule?
Individual student meetings are HIGHLY encouraged. A benefit of being a small school is our ability to make time for one on one touch points with each student. Advising is much more than course scheduling. During these one on one appointments, ensure to speak to students about career aspirations, academic successes and challenges, and personal goal setting.
What else should we talk about in our advising meetings?
Advising meetings are much more than course selection. Please talk to your students about their life, goals, and aspirations. Here is a list of topics that would be a good starting point:
- Career Goals and Aspirations – What do you want to do when you graduate? Have you thought about your summer plans?
- Mental Health and Wellbeing – How are you doing? How have you been feeling lately?
- Organization and Time Management – Are you getting all your homework done? How is task prioritization going? Do you feel you have enough time to accomplish everything you want in a day?
- Self Care and Hobbies – How is the semester going? Do you have time to do the things that bring you joy? What clubs / organizations are you involved with?
- Future life goals – Where do they want to live? Where would they like to travel?
If you need any help at all, Student Success is here for you. Please feel free to email Tricia Dobrient (tdobrien@smumn.edu) if you have any questions or need assistance / guidance.
