What’s it like to screen clergy candidates?

“That’s very niche.”

I often hear that from people who ask me what my clinical specialty is.

I was trained as a generalist and love the variety of roles that come with being a psychologist. I teach, research, lead a new program, consult, supervise, and do clinical work. No day is dull. My dad always taught me to be well-rounded and his advice proved to be prophetic.

And over the years, I’ve developed an expertise in the psychological evaluation of clergy candidates.

Yes, it’s niche.

I like to think of it as a vocation within a vocation. The Church needs healthy candidates to become healthy clergy to then lead healthy faith communities. It all starts with admissions.

I was recently asked to tell a story about my work doing these niche evaluations for the This Whole Life podcast with Pat Millea.

I didn’t know what story I would tell when asked.  Click on the Podcast Link if you want to hear what I had to say and what story I told.
