September is wrapping up for Cardinal athletics, but there’s still plenty of action ahead for our fall sports. We still have so much to look forward to.
CROSS COUNTRY IS BACK
After a break of just over two weeks, the Saint Mary’s cross country team is back in action.
On Friday, October 3, the team will stay close to home, heading to Colfax, Wisconsin, where UW-Eau Claire will host the Eau Claire Blugold Invitational. The men’s race is set to begin at 4:15 p.m., followed by the women’s race at 5:15 p.m.
CONFERENCE WEEK FOR WOMEN’S SOCCER
It was a packed weekend for the Cardinal women’s soccer team (8-2), as they hit the road for back-to-back games on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, the Cardinals secured a 2-0 win over Hamline (3-3-4), with goals from Samantha Munson and first-time scorer Jossy Saamanen. The following day, they wrapped up nonconference play with a tough 1-0 loss to UW-Stevens Point (5-3-4).
With nonconference games behind them, the Cardinals now shift their focus to conference play, beginning Wednesday at home against Macalester (3-5) at 7:00 p.m. They’ll then head to Concordia College (0-5-3)on Saturday, October 4th for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
CONFERENCE PLAY FOR MEN’S SOCCER
The Saint Mary’s men’s soccer team had an eventful week on the field. They opened with a dominant 5-0 shutout over North Central (MN) (2-7) last Wednesday for their first clean sheet of the season, highlighted by several first-time goal scorers. On Saturday, the Cardinals battled to a 1-1 draw with Hamline (8-1-2), with Caleb Gilbert netting a key goal to put them ahead briefly.
Looking ahead, Saint Mary’s will host Macalester (6-3) under the lights on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., before hitting the road to face Concordia College (0-6-3) on Saturday, October 4, with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m.
LONE CONFERENCE GAME FOR VOLLEYBALL
It was an exciting start to conference play for the Cardinal volleyball team (8-8), who opened the weekend with a five-set win over Carleton (2-13) on Saturday — completing a reverse sweep on the road to secure their first conference victory.
It was a thrilling match from start to finish, and the Cardinals now look to carry that momentum into their next contest.
They’ll travel to St. Scholastica (8-6) for their only match of the week on Saturday, October 4, with first serve set for 3:00 p.m.
