It was an action-packed and memorable week for Saint Mary’s Athletics! We hosted a successful Cardinal Excellence Fund Golf Outing with over 50 teams, welcomed seven volleyball programs for the annual Sugar Loaf Classic, and celebrated home-field victories from both soccer teams. Now, we’re gearing up to do it all over again!
VOLLEYBALL ON THE ROAD
The Cardinal volleyball team (4-3) battled through a competitive weekend at their home tournament, going 1-2. They fell 3-1 to an undefeated Wheaton squad receiving national votes and a strong Coe team, before closing the weekend with a 3-1 win over Buena Vista.
The Cardinals now turn their focus to a busy upcoming stretch, starting with a triangular at UW-La Crosse on Wednesday, Sept. 10, where they’ll face the host Eagles at 3:00 p.m. and Luther College at 5:00 p.m. The team then heads to Iowa for four matches at Loras College. Two on Friday starting at 5:00 p.m. and two more on Saturday beginning at noon.
MEN’S SOCCER HOME STAND CONTINUES
The Cardinal men’s soccer team picked up their first win of the season in front of a lively Alumni Day crowd on Saturday, defeating Dubuque 4-2 for Coach Barbosa’s first win as well. After a tough 4-1 loss to Ripon earlier in the week, the team bounced back with key adjustments to secure the home victory
Looking to build on that momentum, the Cardinals continue their homestand with two more matches this week facing Simpson on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 4:00 p.m., followed by a special Senior Day matchup against Coe on Saturday, Sept. 13 at 4:00 p.m.
CROSS COUNTRY MIAC MEET
The Saint Mary’s cross country teams made a strong impression at the Augustana Twilight in South Dakota last Friday. Mya Slavin etched her name into the record books by running the fastest 5K in Cardinal history with a time of 17:57, leading a night of standout performances and several new personal bests.
Energized by their success, the teams now set their sights on the Hamline Invitational, taking place Friday, Sept. 12, with races beginning at 6:00 p.m.
TENNIS IS BACK
Kicking off their season, the Saint Mary’s tennis team will make their debut at home this Saturday, Sept. 13, with a 12:00 p.m. matchup against Bethany Lutheran. The Cardinals are ready to hit the court and start the year strong in front of their home crowd.
WOMEN’S SOCCER ON A ROLL
The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team is off to a flawless 4-0 start this season! The Cardinals secured back-to-back wins with a 2-0 victory over Grinnell on Friday, followed by a 3-0 shutout against Lawrence on Saturday.
They’ll play their fourth consecutive home game on Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. against Wartburg before taking the weekend off to rest ahead of conference play starting next week.
