Five Saint Mary’s University athletic teams will be in action this week, with the competition starting away for women’s soccer on Wednesday. Women’s soccer will play twice this week one away and one at home while men’s soccer are home on Saturday. Volleyball will be on the road all weekend and Cross Country will be competing Saturday.
Women’s Soccer Plays Twice This Week
The women’s soccer team is looking to redeem themselves after a tough loss to UW-Platteville Sunday afternoon with an away game Wednesday at St. Catherine University for a slatted 4pm start to open up MIAC Conference play. You can also can them in action as they return home Saturday, Sept. 21st for a 1pm start at Ochrymowycz Field against Augsburg.
St. Catherine mimics similar record as the Cardinals with a 3-2 start to the season and the Cardinals are 3-1-1 going into the game. Augsburg is also 3-2 and it is historically an even match up as both teams are 18-18 against each other.
Volleyball at UW-La Crosse Invitational
The Cardinals travel no to far away this weekend, only across the river to take on three opponents at the UW-La Crosse Invitational, one of Friday night at two on Saturday. The volleyball team plays Central College at 7pm on Friday, Martin Luther College at 9am, and Nekraska Wesleyan University at 1pm on Saturday as the Cardinals are coming off a 6-1 week.
Central College is 8-4 on the season and has a similar season as the Cardinals as they have played similar teams. Central had beaten Bethany Lutheran and MSOE whereas the Cardinals had lost and had lost to Carroll and Grinnell, again, similar to the Cardinals. The Cardinals face Martin Luther who the Cardinals have historically beaten going 6-4 all time. Lastly, the Cardinals close out the tournament against Nekraska Wesleyan University who is 7-2 and has a one match lead on the Cardinals going into the game.
Men’s Soccer Home Saturday
The men’s soccer team has one game this week and its on Saturday, Sept. 21st versus conference opener Augsburg for a 3:30pm start at Ochrymowycz Field. The Cardinals are undefeated at home as they started their 2024 season 5-0 and fell to two Iowa teams over the last week and are looking to get back on track.
Augsburg has a similar record as the Cardinals as they are 5-1-1 and historically have beaten the Cardinals. The last time the Cardinal beat the Auggies was in 2020.
Men’s and Womens Cross Country Action Saturday
The Cardinals Cross Country team have not raced since their first meet the first week of school, which was Sept. 6th. The Cardinals return to action Saturday as the women’s race at 10am and the men’s to follow at 11am at the St. Olaf College Invitational in Northfield, Minnesota.
