The first day of February was busy, and Saint Mary’s athletics is only going to get more jam packed from here. There’s plenty of action to enjoy this week, with three home events happening on Friday and Saturday.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Cardinal women’s basketball team (8-10) had a challenging week, falling to conference leaders Bethel and Hamline. Their tough stretch continues with a road game against the ranked Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus (18-1) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., followed by a home game against St. Scholastica (8-11) on Saturday at 1 p.m., two teams the Cardinals lost to in their first matchup.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team (6-13) dropped a road game to Hamline last Wednesday, but bounced back on Saturday, ending a five-game losing streak with a win over the Royals. Senior guard Jabari Sawyer led the charge, posting a career-high 30 points in the victory. The team hopes to build on that momentum as they head into this week’s matchups.
They’ll take on Gustavus (17-3) Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. after the women’s game, and then host St. Scholastica (7-13) at 3 p.m. on Saturday—two tough teams the Cardinals fell to earlier in the season.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
The Cardinal women’s hockey team (13-5) had a strong weekend at home, sweeping St. Scholastica on Friday and Saturday. They’ll face a tough challenge on Tuesday night, wrapping up non-conference play against UW-River Falls (16-3-2), the top-ranked team in the nation and defending Division III national champions. The game will be held at home at 7 p.m.
It’s a packed three-game week for the women. To wrap it up, they’ll host Bethel (9-9-1) on Friday at 7 p.m., then head to the Royals’ home rink on Saturday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
MEN’S HOCKEY
The men’s hockey team (8-10-1) faced off against the No. 11-ranked team in the nation, Duluth, this past weekend, ultimately getting swept by St. Scholastica. They’ll head to Bethel (10-7-2) for a 7 p.m. game on Friday night before returning home to host the Royals on Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
TENNIS
The men’s and women’s tennis teams both had dominant performances at home this past Saturday, each earning a 7-0 shutout victory over Ripon College. They’ll continue their home stretch this Friday at 5 p.m. before hitting the road for the first time in 2025, traveling to Dubuque to face the Spartans on Saturday at 2 p.m.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Saint Mary’s track and field team had a successful outing at UW-Stout this past Saturday, with over five Cardinals setting new personal bests. The team will head back to Wisconsin this Saturday to compete in the UW-River Falls Winter Classic.
This Friday and Saturday, at any home event, Edina Realty will be sponsoring a Sock Drive for the third consecutive year. The drive will benefit the Winona Community Warming Center and Catholic Charities organizations and we invite you to bring new socks to donate. Go Cardinals!
