The Lasallian Charism: A Lived Expression of Catholicism by Marisa Naryka

What is Lasallian?

Lasallian refers to the way of life, spirituality, and educational philosophy that Saint John Baptist de La Salle imparted to the Brothers of the Christian Schools who fully embrace and live out in their daily life. It is their way of living out the Catholic Faith.

What is a Charism?

A Charism is a grace or spiritual gift given to us in service of/for the good of the Church. Saint John Bapist de La Salle was given the charism of educating the poor boys of his time. This calling led him to establish the community of Brothers and their way of life, which has been passed down and disseminated by the Brothers throughout the years.Today, the laity in Lasallian ministries live out the charism through their work as partners.

How is it a lived expression?

A lived expression is how the charism is manifested in daily life. It is important for us to know and recognize that Lasallian comes forth from the Catholic faith. Just like the charism of the other religious congregation, i.e. the Franciscans or the Benedictines, each obtains its origins through the Catholic identity, but come to fruition differently. For instance, the Benedictines are known for their hospitality, which is a manifestation of their charism. An example of our lived expression is the prayer format we use at all major functions. We begin by remembering that we are always in the Holy Presence of God and end with “live Jesus in our hearts, forever.”

What does this mean for us as members of the Saint Mary’s community?

It is how we integrate the Lasallian tradition into our community life (i.e., faith, education, service, etc.). By being a part of the community, we are asked to join the Brothers in animating the Lasallian charism through the education we provide and the accompaniment we do with the students. We bring to life the vision Saint John Baptist de La Salle had by how we encounter the students entrusted to our care and one another.

Reflection Question: How has the Lasallian Charism influenced how you live out your life, personally and professionally?
