Hanukkah (Chanukah) is the eight day Jewish festival of lights celebrated each night with lighting the menorah (7 branched candelabrum), special prayers and food. This religious holiday celebrates the rededication of the Holy Temple.

In the second century, a small band of faithful Jews, led by Judah the Maccabee, defeated the mighty Greek army and reclaimed the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. When they went to relight the Temple’s Menorah, they found only a single cruet of uncontaminated oil. Miraculously, this one-day supply of oil lasted eight days until new purified oil could be prepared.

Let us learn from the Jews and ask for the grace to always trust in God’s providence.
