Study Abroad: Arthur N. Flodstrom ’64 Memorial Scholarship

Dr. Arthur Flodstrom was an alum and beloved professor at Saint Mary’s University.  After earning his undergraduate degree from the college, he studied at the University of Stockholm, Sweden, and earned his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature.  Dr. Flodstrom taught English and Journalism at Saint Mary’s until his passing in 1999.  He chaired the English Department, was recognized as an outstanding employee by the university, and was a member of the Modern Language Association.

The Arthur N. Flodstrom ’64 Memorial Scholarship was established and funded through memorial gifts and gifts from his brother, John Flodstrom, Ph.D., and his sister, Renis Barrett to honor Dr. Flodstrom’s legacy by assisting high-achieving upper-class students in good standing who hope to study outside of the United States.

Arthur N. Flodstrom ’64 Memorial Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

* Students applying for this scholarship should be/have:

  • Demonstrate financial need through a valid 24-25 FAFSA,
  • U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen,
  • History of and continuing involvement in school and/or community activities,
  • Junior or Senior, and
  • Minimum grade point average of 2.5

Note: This scholarship is not renewable and is not available to students with Freshman or Sophomore status.  Students looking at a full semester or short term study abroad experience during the Spring/Summer of 2024 are encouraged to apply.

The exact number and amount of scholarships available will be dependent upon the number of applications submitted.  The Arthur N. Flodstrom ’64 Memorial Scholarship is in additional to other gift aid.

To be considered for the Arthur N. Flodstrom ’64 Memorial Scholarship award, please complete the following application and submit no later than Friday, November 15, 2024:

Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee and notification of awards will be made no later than December 20th, 2024. Once selected the scholarship recipient(s) will be asked to submit a ‘Thank you letter’ to the benefactors in the spring of 2024.
