A love and passion for sports is not enough to begin a career in the sports industry. Those things are important, but you also need to bring experiences and an understanding of business and communications to help a sports organization reach revenue goals. That was just one of the insights shared by executives from the Minnesota Lynx and Timberwolves at a Career in Sports Event on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at their practice facility in Minneapolis.
The keynote speaker was Vice President of Fan Engagement Jeff Munneke, who shared that students need to spend as much time as possible enhancing their career skills, such as networking and interviewing, in order to jumpstart their sports career. Before that, a panel of speakers consisting of Vice President of Sales and Service Ashley Armstrong, Senior Director of Marketing Bailey Wallner, and Vice President of Corporate Partnerships Mike Resnick told the students about how previous experiences outside of the Timberwolves and in other industries made them more valuable candidates and employees when they made the transition to the basketball organization.
After the speakers, the group attended the Minnesota Timberwolves victory over the Washington Wizards.
