Student Senate Meeting Minutes – February 1, 2022

Executive Board Reports

Elijah Williams, President
I’d like to welcome Hunter Phillips to the Student Senate! He has been appointed to the position of La Salle, Skemp, and Heffron Hall Representative.

The Guide to Cardinal Life that we presented to you last week has been completed by Marketing and Communications and we have the final draft in hand! If you’d like a copy, please reach out to me and I will get you one.

You will notice an announcement tomorrow which lists the newly updated COVID protocols considering the lay low period has ended. Please read these carefully to fully understand the new protocols. If you have any questions about these please reach out to covid@smumn.edu or the Student Senate at senate@smumn.edu.

The capital improvement suggestion form will close tomorrow, Wednesday, February 2, at 10:00 p.m. Please be sure to get any final suggestions in as soon as possible for consideration!

The Student Senate Presidential Election is rapidly approaching. The petition and campaign packets will become available on Monday, February 14. Any student who has sat on the senate for at least a year is eligible to run for President. This includes any sitting senator elected in the fall of 2021. If you are interested in running for President, please reach out to me with any questions.

Mary Furlong, Vice President of Academic Affairs
I am working on plans for a teacher appreciation week. It is still in its early stages, but more to come later in the semester. If you would like to be involved in that project, please let me know so I can keep you in the loop!

Joseph Schauf, Vice President of Financial Affairs
There is nothing currently in the pipeline as far as financial requests. I’m working with Twigz to get budget forms out to clubs in the coming week or two.

Jonathon Krull, Vice President of Public Affairs
Next week we will be starting our meeting at 6:30 p.m. to write thank you’s for the Minnesota State Grant, please make sure to be here on time!

Ann Merchlewitz and I met today to discuss the Voting Engagement Plan, marketing is putting it all together and I will present it to Senate when completed.

We have the final estimates for the first round of Capital Improvements, Angel and I will be presenting them next week for a final vote.

Angel Sacta Espinoza, Vice President of Campus Affairs
We are meeting with Jim Bedtke next week and have gone through the list of capital improvement suggestions and have decided which ones we would like to go through with. We have one more that is still waiting on a quote for pricing.

Lyanna Novak, Vice President of Student Affairs

February 4 – Snowshoeing at 3:00 p.m.: Meet at the Clock Tower.
February 5 – Pregame Mocktails in the Hall of Fame Room from 12:00-2:00 p.m. (before Women’s Hockey Game).
February 6 – Snowman Building Competition by Toner Stairs from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Grand Prize is a Ninja Blender.

SAC Collaborative Meeting
Successful and insightful. Plans to have more collaborative efforts between SAC, RISE and the Student Senate.

Wellness Center
We have a new Physician Assistant (PA) after the transitional staffing period in collaboration with Winona Health, her name is Hannah. She is a great resource and I want to inform you all that the Wellness Center is still of service to you all.

Riley Hall, Vice President of Media and Communications
We are continuing to work on the new Student Senate website.

Destiny Walker, Vice President of Multicultural Affairs
FGI is hiring counselors for Countdown to College this Summer. Countdown to College (C2C) is a program geared toward youth of color. They spend two weeks in the summer gaining college experience. The deadline for applications is Friday, February 4. There are signs around campus or you can contact me or Elena Lacey in the FGI office. Also, happy Black History Month and Chinese New Year!

Sophia O’Neil, Executive Assistant
I am working with the Ed Standards committee and this week they are going over course cancellation protocol. When they usually go over these, they ask me for a student opinion. If you have any pressing opinions about how they adjust this process, please reach out to me!
