Réunion is a French-speaking island in the Indian Ocean, about 420 miles east of Madagascar. French Brother Scubilion Rosseau (1797-1867) spent 34 years of his life ministering to the slaves of the island, including after their emancipation in 1848. He was beloved and venerated in Réunion and is remembered there as the “catechist of the slaves.” He was beatified in Réunion by St. John Paul II in 1989.
