To kickoff the festival weekend, Sandbar Storytelling Festival and the Minnesota Marine Art Museum present “Water Stories” by Kao Kalia Yang.
Meet the Author:
A selective mute in the English speaking world for much of her early life, Kalia’s unintended speaking career started in 2008 with the publication of her first book The Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir. Since then, Kalia has spoken at hundreds of book groups, faith institutions, keynoted national conferences, presented for diverse organizations, and lectured at colleges and universities across the country. Kalia speaks with great intimacy, perspective, and grace on refugee and immigrant experiences, issues in literacy and education, race, class, and gender.
This would be an amazing opportunity for your students to attend and hear her speak!
Event Details:
Date: Thursday, Oct. 12 at 7pm
Location: Minnesota Marine Art Museum, Gallery 5
Price: Tickets are $25 and include a traditional Hmong dessert following the performance.
Note: This event will include the introduction of the 2023 Sandbar Storytelling Festival storytellers. Be the first to meet and greet these internationally known artists who will perform on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13-14, at Saint Mary’s University.
We have created a student discount code for the tickets, in case they are interested in attending. Tickets are originally $25, and using the code, SMU, will take them just under $5. Wow! However, since seating is limited for the event venue, there are currently only 30 tickets available at this price and can be purchased at sandbarstorytellingfestival.org. At the door, tickets will be $5.00 for students.
If you have an interest and need to reserve for a large group, call us at (507) 703-6001 or email us at sandbarwinona@gmail.com or kamrynmattamgmt@gmail.com and we can help situate your tickets for you.
If your students are staying on campus for fall break… and are interested in keeping busy, we are also looking for volunteers to help with the festival this Friday 10/13 and Saturday 10/14. They would be able to attend the festival for FREE! Being a volunteer guarantees the opportunity to see each storyteller session. Not only do we have storyteller sessions, but there will be music groups and food trucks(open to serve 11-7)!
