Dr. Heidi Dahlmann, associate professor in the chemistry and biochemistry department, recently published her research team’s work on carbonyl-olefin metathesis, a method for making cyclic carbon-based molecules, in the chemistry journal Organics.
Ten former and current undergraduate students, including Saint Mary’s own biochemistry majors Nicholas Ryan (B23), Alyssa Jones (B25), and Evan Vazquez, are among the co-authors, with another nine undergraduate students acknowledged, including Saint Mary’s Rachel Szepieniec (B25). The publication culminates ten years of research completed at Saint Mary’s University from 2020-2026 and at Hendrix College, Dr. Dahlmann’s prior institution, from 2016-2020. The student co-authors carried out experiments in the laboratory, analyzed the data, and prepared figures and tables of results, with Nicholas and Alyssa participating to complete their required senior research theses, while Alyssa and Evan also participated as grant-supported full-time summer research assistants.
