It is typically observed for two days, beginning at sunset on October 2 and ending the evening of October 4; although some denominations will observe it only one day. This is a contemplative holiday for the Jews, with no work permitted and attending prayer services attendance encouraged. Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the ten day span of introspection and repentance for the Jews, which ends with Yom Kippur.
