The Office of Mission and Ministry is pleased to announce that Mission Formation Opportunities will be resuming in-person this summer.

For those interested in attending one of our external programs, I ask that you complete this interest form by February 7, 2022. We will be sending a limited number of participants from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.

Please contact the Office of Mission & Ministry at officeofmission@smumn.edu with any questions.

External mission formation opportunities include:

Buttimer Institute of Lasallian Studies
This three-year residential course of study that meets for two weeks each summer is an intensive Lasallian formation and education program that studies the life and work of St. John Baptist de La Salle and the origins of the Lasallian mission. Through analysis of the writings of De La Salle and an analysis of some modern educators, participants deepen their understanding of the Lasallian heritage and its influence on contemporary education. Participation in the Buttimer Institute is open to faculty and staff.

The 2022 program will be held Sunday, June 26 through Saturday, July 9 at Manhattan College in New York.

Brother John Johnston Institute of Contemporary Lasallian Practice
This two year program focuses on our Lasallian Catholic heritage in light of contemporary realities. The thematic areas covered will be: Lasallian Story and Vision; Lasallian Service to the Poor and the Promotion of Social Justice; and Lasallian Spirituality, Vocation and Association. A capstone project is expected of all participants. Consists of five in-person gatherings and four online sessions. The Johnston Institute of Contemporary Lasallian Practice is designed for faculty and staff.

The Summer 2022 Cohort IV will begin in July at Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois.

Lasallian Social Justice Institute (LSJI)
This annual one-week workshop, held in different locations around the country, attempts to ground participants experientially, practically, and spiritually in the Catholic social teachings on social justice and in the preferential option for the poor that is a hallmark of Lasallian identity. The LSJI is open to faculty and staff.

The 2022 program will take place Sunday, June 26 through Saturday, July 2 at the De La Salle Blackfeet School in Browning, Montana. LSJI is capped to 20 participants through a first-come/first-served registration process. Topics for the 2022 session are currently in development. Participants who attended the 2021 virtual program on this topic will receive priority registration.

Collegium: A Colloquy on Faith and Intellectual Life
Collegium seminars bring together scholars interested in exploring aspects of the Catholic intellectual tradition, and their role in the mission of Catholic higher education. This opportunity rotates on a yearly basis between The College of Holy Cross, Saint John’s University, MN, and the University of Portland. The Collegium seminars are designed for faculty and university leaders.

The 2022 Colloquy will be held Friday, June 10 through Friday, June 17 at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota.
