Elizabeth (Beth) Martinka is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker offering mental health counseling at Saint Mary’s University. An alumna of Saint Mary’s Master of Social Work program, Beth uses a variety of techniques that include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills to support students with whatever challenges they are experiencing.
“I really felt driven to help people,” Beth says of her decision to pursue social work. “I enjoy meeting new people, and it’s rewarding when they start to notice positive changes in their lives.”
Beth encourages students to be proactive about their mental health. “It’s okay to come in even when things are going well,” she says. “That’s actually the best time to strengthen your skills—before challenges arise.” She’s learned that for many students, “starting tasks is sometimes the hardest thing to accomplish,” and emphasizes the importance of breaking things down into more manageable pieces and finding ways to take the first steps that don’t feel so overwhelming.
A longtime Winona resident, Beth earned her bachelor’s degrees in marketing and mass communications from Winona State University and previously worked at Saint Mary’s Press. Outside of work, she enjoys walking her golden retriever, Kevin, and cheering on her children in baseball, hockey, and dance. Beth said one piece of advice she wishes she had taken sooner is that “self-care is always important.”
