Kabara Wiffle Ball Tournament Hits it Out of the Park

This past Saturday, on October 5th, the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies hosted the first ever Kabara Wiffle Ball Tournament.  Eight teams of 6-10 faculty, staff, and students competed on the practice soccer fields from 9am-noon.  We had 8 teams in a traditional, single elimination bracket.  For the first set of games, the fields were a bit slippery, making base running an adventure.  The big news is that for the first round of games at 9am, there were over 65 participants.

The ultimate goal of the event was twofold.  First, we got a significant number of students into the Anthony 59’ and Sandra Adducci Family Makerspace to make their team shirts.  Second, we were able to demonstrate a creative approach to the creation of a brand new event on campus.  While many students, and other community members have visions of possible things – this tournament was a model for how to execute on these visions.

A big shout out to the winners, the Giggle Gang (orange shirts) for their win in the championship game against the Policy Pitches.  Which leads me to highlighting some of the great team names – Pitch, Please – The Profiteers – the Pitch Perfects – the Groundhogs – Res Life – and one of my favorites, The Red Army.  Thank you to everyone who helped us make this an awesome experience happen.  Eli from athletics went above and beyond to set up the fields for us.  Terra Lieser and Priyanka Satish did most of the heavy lifting to make the tournament run smoothly.  Lynette Johnson over in event services was key to getting things arranged and coordinated across the various stakeholders.

This event was full of energy and good natured competition.  This is a tradition we hope to continue in the fall of 2025.  Continue to watch the SMU Today for updates about what is happening with the Kabara Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies in the coming months!
