Janet Heukeshoven presents and conducts at MMEA Conference

Dr. Janet Heukeshoven is both conducting the Minnesota Intercollegiate Honor Band and presenting a workshop for Minnesota Future Music Educators at the annual Minnesota Music Education Association Conference this week in Minneapolis. https://mmea.org/events/midwinter-convention/

More than 40 high school students will be attending the MFME workshop Thursday afternoon February 16th geared to career development in music education, a program Dr. Heukeshoven designed and is co-leading with Mr. Chip Williams.  SMU Alumni Holly Nester Simon is presenting a break-out session specific to teaching elementary classroom music as part of the afternoon’s sessions.

In addition, Dr. Heukeshoven is premiering a new band composition at the conference with the Intercollegiate Honor band composed by a college-aged composer, as well as Eric Heukeshoven’s work My Music Reaches to the Sky, based on Minnesota native Chippewa melodies.  The Intercollegiate Band performance will take place in the Minneapolis Convention Center 8:45-9:45 on Saturday the 18th.  SMU student-musicians performing in the ensemble include Emma Schuster and Hannah Bunke, flutes, Angela Spors, clarinet and Sosy Kokosian, saxophone.  They will be rehearsing Thursday and Friday in Minneapolis in preparation for the concert which is shared with three other collegiate conductors.
