International Education Week, November 15th-19th

Special activities and fun prizes will be available during the week of November 15th-19th in recognition of International Education Week (IEW).

IEW is an annual celebration of international education and exchange worldwide. During this week, institutions across the United States and around the world host events to recognize international students, promote education abroad, exchange ideas, learn about other countries and cultures, and support internationalization. SMU’s International Center has planned the following events and encourages students, faculty and staff to participate.  Please contact intlcenter@smumn.edu with any questions.

Schedule of Events

Taste the World (Sponsored by Chartwells)

Each day, Monday thru Friday, Chartwells will prepare a variety of foods from home countries of some of our international students.

  • Monday
    Canada – Tourtière
  • Tuesday
    Italy – Pasta Pomodoro, Tortellini Bolognese, Herbed Focaccia, Hot Italian Beef Sandwich, Tiramisu and Panna Cotta for dessert
  • Wednesday
    China/Asia – Vegetable Lo Mein, Pork Stir Fry, Egg Rolls
  • Thursday
    Mexico – Tacos, Nachos and Fajitas
  • Friday
    Japan/Sweden – Ramen Noodle Bar, Swedish Meatballs

Trivia Contest (Sponsored by the International Center)

This trivia game tests your knowledge of the 15 home countries of SMU’s current undergraduate international students.  In the spirit of friendly competition, participants are asked not to use the internet to assist with answer choices.  Answer all 15 questions for a chance to win Saint Mary’s gear (student category and a faculty/staff category). Whoever answers the most questions correctly will win.  If there is a tie, those participants will be entered into a random drawing to declare winners. Trivia Contest ends Friday, November 19th at 12:00 pm. Winners will be contacted via email that day.

Worldwide Bingo (Sponsored by the International Center)

Come and win prizes!  Bingo with an international theme will be held on Wednesday, November 17th from 7:00 PM-8:00 pm in the Common Room, St. Mary’s Hall.  Space is limited, so reserve your spot by signing up here before 4:00 pm on Wednesday, November 17.

International Movie Night (Sponsored by the International Center)

Come watch Life of Pi, Thursday, November 18th from 7:00-9:00 pm in SLC 200.  Life of Pi is a film based on a bestselling novel of the same name by Yann Martel, a Canadian author born in Spain, who also grew up in Costa Rica, France, and Mexico.  Directed by Ang Lee; the movie earned him an Oscar, one of many awards attained by the film.  The story is an adventure drama centering around a teenager from India.  The movie has an IMDb rating of 7.9/10 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 86%.  Seating is limited, so reserve your spot by signing up here before 4:00 pm on Thursday, November 18.
