Saint Mary’s University owes much of its success to the support and dedication of one exceptional alumnus, Tony Piscitiello B’69, M’82. His contributions have played a pivotal role in making it possible for us to celebrate Hall of Famers and the Cardinal Excellence Fund Dinner.
When you look at Saint Mary’s athletics, it might be more fitting to ask what he didn’t do during his time as a Cardinal.
“I was in disbelief when Brian Sisson, Athletic Director, informed me of my selection. My induction into the Saint Mary’s Sports Hall of Fame is very special for me,” said Piscitiello. “I was a 50 year employee of Saint Mary’s and had the privilege of knowing most of the previous inductees, many of whom I cherish as friends.”
“I am in great company.”
Piscitiello made an impact in nearly every decision that has shaped Cardinal athletics into what it is today.
For around 14 years, athletics reported directly to Piscitiello. During his tenure, the Gostomski Fieldhouse and Jul Gernes ’61 Pool were built, the trails were expanded, several new varsity sports were introduced, and the 2000 fastpitch softball team won a national championship.
Piscitiello also led and co-chaired the football task force, which was responsible for exploring the feasibility of restarting the men’s football program.
Along with others, he helped establish the Cardinal M-Club, now known as the Cardinal Excellence Fund, the annual fundraising arm of Cardinal Athletics.
As a student, Piscitiello was on the 1966 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball championship team.
“There was the elation of being on the 1966 MIAC championship baseball team under the tutelage of Hall of Fame Coach, Max Molock.”
He has been a respected and invaluable member of the university’s Lasallian community for over 50 years, holding roles such as admission counselor, vice president for admission, executive vice president, and senior development director.
His approachable personality and strong connections have made him an exceptional recruiter, not only for Saint Mary’s as a whole but also, to the athletics department’s great benefit.
“As a student and then employee I will always remember the cohesiveness of the students and faculty-staff, their genuineness and commitment to excellence, honesty and faith.”
“I never earned a varsity letter in college so I am considering this Hall of Fame induction as my letter!”
