On February 13, 1982, Brother James Miller, a native of Ellis, Wisconsin, and an SMU alum, was gunned down in Guatemala. Why? Because he, like the other Brothers he lived and worked with, was involved in educating and thus enhancing the lives of indigenous youth. In declaring him a martyr, Pope Francis recognized that he gave his life for the young people he served and that, in doing so, he was living out his faith.

Brother James aka “Santiago” was beatified in 2019; he is the first religious Brother in the USA to be declared “Blessed.” He is buried in the family plot in Ellis, Wisconsin, near Stevens Point. On Saturday, March 25, Campus Ministry is sponsoring a pilgrimage to his gravesite. More details follow soon. Blessed Brother James Miller-Pray for us!
