Today Winona State University is announcing that Scott Sorvaag, Ed.D., current chair of undergraduate teacher education at Saint Mary’s, has been named WSU’s dean of the College of Education; he will assume the position July 1.

Dr. Sorvaag, who has served the university for 21 years, has held a number of roles including dean of education from 2011-2015, director of general education from 2015-2017, and his current role from 2022 to present, all while teaching, advising, and preparing countless aspiring educators.

Highly published and regarded in his field, Dr. Sorvaag has twice been named Student Life Adviser of the Year, received the Saint Mary’s Brother Charlie Burke Student Life Award, and was recognized for outstanding performance of duties and responsibilities, among other accolades.

“My greatest accomplishments are not mine, but are reflected in the goodness, intelligence, and kindness revealed in those that have been part of our Saint Mary’s community,” Dr. Sorvaag said.

“This career advancement is great for Scott, and we wish him continued success in serving students and contributing to the scholarship in the field of education,” said Michael Lovorn, Ph.D., dean of the School of Education. “We thank him for his many years of dedicated service, putting students first in his work. We know he will continue this focus as he works to positively shape the future of education.”
