Another scholarship has just become available for the Spring 2025 semester!
The Dr. Priscilla J. Herbison Scholarship has combined with the Brother Julius Winkler Scholarship for these funds to now be available. Both of these amazing individuals were longstanding educators and leaders at Saint Mary’s – more information on each follows the scholarship information.
Recipients must be:
- A graduate student officially enrolled in any Master’s Degree program with regular student status, with preference to those in the Interdisciplinary Studies program,
- Able to demonstrate financial need through a valid 24-25 FAFSA,
- Must be in good academic standing and have completed at least one semester of coursework,
- Persons from underrepresented groups, first generation, with disabilities, and/or are single mothers are encouraged to apply,
- Must not be receiving any type of tuition reimbursement from an employer.

Selection process: The recipients of this scholarship will be selected based on an application process reviewed by a committee under the direction of the Financial Aid Office. Selection will be made to meet the preferred eligibility criteria, and not utlitizing AI within responses. There is one scholarship of $2,231 available.
Applications due no later than December 16, 2024 for Spring semester 2025. Scholarship decisions will be communicated out to applicants no later than January 15, 2025.
Priscilla J. Herbison, MSW, JD. Originally from Minneapolis, Priscilla earned her Bachelor’s Degree from College St. Catherine, St. Paul, 1965. As an avid learner, she continued her education: Master of Social Work from the University Illinois, Urbana, 1969. Juris Doctor, University Minnesota, 1982. Dr. Herbison was the Program Director of the Master’s Degree in Human Development at St. Mary’s University for nearly 20 years where she changed the lives of many students and received the George Christiansen Award for Excellence in Education in 1998. Prior to her time at Saint Mary’s, she was a social worker with Catholic Social Service, St. Paul, 1965-1967, Catholic Welfare Service, Minneapolis, 1969-1971. Professor social work University Würzburg.V., 1971-1974. Professor, director social work program St. Cloud (Minnesota) State University, since 1974, chairman department sociology, anthropology and social work, since 1987. She was also the author of God Knows We Get Angry: Healthy Ways to Deal with It.
Brother Julius Winkler, FSC, Ph.D. was a Saint Mary’s alumnus from the Class of 1936. Originally from St. Paul, he majored in Chemistry. Brother Julius was a dedicated educator, faith-filled leader. His service to Saint Mary’s spanned a period of more than 40 years. In 1952, he began as academic dean of the college and in 1977 he became graduate dean. His heart remained in the classroom, and he served as a professor of psychology at both the Winona and Twin Cities campuses. He received the university’s Religious Service Award in 1985, and was named a Distinguished University Professor in 2006. He served as a De La Salle Christian Brother for 72 years and retired from teaching only five years before his death in 2004. Prior to his time at Saint Mary’s he was a teacher and administrator at Catholic high schools from 1936 to 1950, before becoming director of graduate studies at St. Louis University.
