Dr. Richard “Dick” Kowles M ’67 dedicated his life to teaching. In honor of his legacy and through the generosity of his former students, colleagues, and friends, the Aquinas Hall Genetics Lab will be named in his honor.

A professor emeritus of biology, Dr. Kowles shared his knowledge of genetics, his dry sense of humor, and his passion for research in the Saint Mary’s Biology Department for more than 30 years. A respected educator, he was constantly in search of a better way to present material to his students.

Renowned regionally and nationally as an expert in the field of genetics, Dr. Kowles distinguished himself as both a researcher and a writer through the publication of books, textbooks, and scientific articles. He is revered for his extensive research on genetic and molecular aspects of kernel development in maize (corn).

Dr. Kowles was honored with a Presidential Award for Outstanding Merit by Saint Mary’s in 2012 for teaching, mentoring, and inspiring thousands of biology students for more than 40 years (total) and for securing more than 30 national and private grants for the advancement of science at Saint Mary’s. Many students have followed in his footsteps, and many more have been inspired by the lifelong educator.
