Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.

Martin Luther King Jr

As Cardinals, we continue to work together to retain the sense of community that makes Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota the special place that it is.  Of course, we can only do so by caring for one another, by being light and love to one another.  When we feel our compassion and kindness fraying, let’s remember that light drives out darkness and love drives out hate.  We can and must make the choice to be our best selves so that our community can be the best version of itself.

I am so delighted that a student and a faculty member shared with me caring moments that they have experienced here at Saint Mary’s:

  • A student shared that her professor made banana bread for a class a week or so ago.  The faculty member even adjusted to the pandemic by taking the time to individually bag each slice to create a “grab and go” treat for the students as they left class.
  • A faculty member shared thanks for another faculty member who has been providing a series of 4 two-hour workshops on how to use LinkedIn more powerfully to promote Saint Mary’ and our programs and connect with others, etc. This is such important work in that the faculty member is empowering others to be more effective with the tools at their fingertips, and she’s enabling others to focus on what they CAN control versus what they can’t.  The faculty member is generously offering these workshops for free, out of her own time, to all of the schools in the SGPP.

What student, staff or faculty member has been light and love to you this week? Email me at caringcardinals@smumn.edu and share that story.  Caring creates community.
