🌸 IT’S BLOOMING! 🌸
COME SEE THE VOODOO LILY!
📍 Greenhouse – AH169
Something weird and wonderful is happening in the greenhouse…
🌿 Meet the Voodoo Lily
(Amorphophallus konjac) – a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia, known for its giant single inflorescence, which can reach up to 4 feet tall! The plant belongs to the Arum family (Araceae) and produces a dramatic spathe and spadix structure when it blooms.
But here’s the kicker: to attract carrion-loving pollinators like flies and beetles, it emits a strong odor that smells like rotting meat. This mimicry is a clever evolutionary strategy known as sapromyiophily.
It only blooms once a year (if you’re lucky!) and the bloom only lasts a few days—so catch it while you can!
📸 Bring your curiosity, your camera, and maybe a clothespin for your nose.
