Saint Mary’s Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Dean Beckman was one of 25 faculty members from across the country chosen to attend last week’s NCAA Division III FAR Fellows Institute in Indianapolis. The Institute is a leadership program that helps FARs take a deeper dive into their roles and responsibilities as a liaison between academics and athletics. Beckman said the role of a FAR is “growing increasingly important and complex as the percentage of student-athletes as part of the overall study body enrollment at schools across the country increases.” This year’s Institute was held in conjunction with the wider Faculty Athletics Representatives Association Annual Meeting, where issues that were discussed included mental health of athletes and coaches, the 50th anniversary of Title IX, and legislation that will be voted on at the January NCAA Convention.
