General Auditions for the musical and one-act plays will be Monday, January 9 at 6:00pm in the Page Theatre. There are two parts to the audition:

  • For the musical, auditioners should prepare one Sondheim musical theatre song. It should be about 16 – 32 bars (30 seconds) with music by Stephen Sondheim. For the one act plays, auditioners should prepare a contemporary monologue of 60 – 90 seconds. You will only have 2 minutes to audition with both pieces, so time your material carefully.
  • Following the songs and monologues, those auditioning for the musical will stay and learn some of the music from the score. This is to assist with part reading and the ability to sing the dissonant lines of Sondheim’s music.

Callbacks for the musical and one-act plays will be Tuesday, January 10 at 6pm in the Page Theatre and Studio Theatre. Stage Management will post callback lists on the call board outside the Green Room following Monday’s auditions. Please note your callback time(s) and location(s) as well as any special instructions. Scripts and scores will be available at callbacks. There will also be a dance callback for Sondheim on Sondheim the same night.

All theatre majors auditioning for the spring productions must audition with prepared material. For non-majors without monologues, some short selections for cold readings will be provided. All singers must prepare a song to be considered for the musical and must have sheet music in the appropriate key for the pianist. Sandy Todd is the accompanist for auditions. She will be available to go over your music with you on Sunday, January 8 in the Figliulo Recital Hall; 3 – 5pm. Bring your music. NEW: You may use pre-recorded music for your audition.

Rehearsals for both theatre productions will begin Wednesday, January 11. Events that may conflict with rehearsals, such as DRC rehearsals, KCACTF, USITT, Fireside, U/RTAs, UPTAs, Midwest Theatre Auditions, MN Music Educators Conference, Gaslight, etc., should be noted on your audition form. However, please be aware that these may affect casting.

Dance Auditions for the DRC Concert will take place Saturday, January 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Valencia Arts Center. Auditions are open to intermediate and advanced dancers with experience in ballet, pointe, jazz, modern, and contemporary dance. Please bring a recent headshot, a print out of your class/work/ activities schedule, and wear appropriate dance attire and shoes.
