Close to half of Minnesota college students rely on the State Grant program to pay for college. But due to increased enrollment, the program is facing a $131 million shortfall. Next fall, students will face either the complete loss of their grants or cuts that average more than 30%.
You can help. Policymakers can act during the legislative session to fix this shortfall in the State Grant program. This is the state’s core support for keeping college affordable. And it needs to be preserved. This coming fall, more than 88,000 college students from low- and middle-income families are expected to receive State Grants.
Reaching out to your hometown legislators and connecting with them as constituents is the first step. And then you can ask them to keep Minnesota’s commitment to college students and the State Grant program.
The State Grant program helps students earning certificates, associate degrees and bachelor’s degrees. They’re traditional age students and adult learners. They attend public and private nonprofit colleges. They’re from every corner of the state.
Minnesota’s state senators and representatives are back to work at the Capitol. Now is a great time to thank them for the work they do, connect as a constituent, and educate them about the program and the unaffordable burden the State Grant program shortfall will impose on college students.
