October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, which is a great time to talk about how to stay safe online. This year’s theme, “Don’t Make it Easy for Them,” is all about making it harder for threat actors to succeed. While we can’t eliminate every cyber risk, we can reduce our risk by practicing good security habits, recognizing suspicious activity, and knowing when to act. Here are four easy reminders you can use to protect yourself and your devices:
- Use strong passwords: Make your passwords long and use a mix of letters and numbers. Always use a different password for every account so that if one is hacked, the others stay safe.
- Add extra security (MFA): Use extra security steps, like an authenticator app, instead of just a password. This makes it much harder for hackers to break into your accounts.
- Watch out for tricks: Be careful with sneaky messages or emails that pretend to be from someone important (like a teacher or a supervisor) asking you to do something unusual.
- Keep your apps and devices updated: It can be annoying when your computer forces you to do an update, but those updates fix security bugs that hackers could use to get into your device.
Thank you for your shared commitment to keeping our university secure.
