I explore whether one aspect of purgatory is that it is the ultimate healer of trauma. I look at the similarities between sin and trauma. From there, I look at how purgatory is related to sin and then how it could be related to trauma. Because of its nature, it seems trauma couldn’t exist in heaven, but it also strikes me as difficult to totally rid ourselves of this side of heaven, so it suggests a similar process to purgatory is needed. Then, I look at how the purification process of purgatory works, based on Church teaching and a Saint’s mystical vision of purgatory, and note many parallels with what I understand the process of healing trauma to be. Lastly, I see whether there are any benefits to these potential insights, if these are valid connections and conclusions to draw.
