On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, Saint Mary’s students joined hundreds of other students at Minnesota private colleges and universities for Day at the Capitol — a powerful day of advocacy training, skill-building, meeting with legislators, free lunch, and networking in support of the MN State Grant.
The MN State Grant program provides need-based aid to thousands of Minnesota college students from low- and middle-income families. As the state faces competing interests during its budget process, legislators must hear about the direct impact that MN State Grant funding has on our students. With a historic funding shortfall for the MN State Grant program, critically needed student financial aid is at risk. Over 67,000 Minnesota students — from low- and middle-income families depend on these grants. Without action, students from low- and middle-income families will have their State Grant awards cut significantly or eliminated starting next fall. The unprecedented cuts will have a major impact, hurting students at private nonprofit colleges, Minnesota State colleges and universities, tribal colleges, and the University of Minnesota.
Thanks to our students who were powerful voices with legislators on this issue. Special thanks to the many Student Senate members who attended to advocate for our student body.
