The Saint Mary’s women’s hockey team is aiming to host another awareness game this week as the teams gear up to play for something bigger than themselves.

This Saturday, Feb. 7, the women’s hockey team will host Bethel at 3:00 p.m. for a Sophie’s Squad Mental Health Awareness Game and benefit for Riley VanderEsch.

Sophie’s Squad was founded in 2021 to improve the mental health of athletes from youth through college by raising awareness and removing the stigma surrounding mental health. The organization works to ensure athletes know it’s okay to ask for help and that there is always hope and always help.

At the heart of this event is Riley VanderEsch’s story.

In the fall of 2025, Riley was diagnosed with a diffuse midline glioma (H3 K27), an aggressive brain tumor. She has completed radiation and is currently undergoing a new form of chemotherapy. The Cardinals, along with the Saint Mary’s community, are rallying behind Riley’s incredible strength, courage, and fight.

Fans are encouraged to wear teal or grey to support Sophie’s Squad, Riley, and mental health awareness.
