Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota announced today that Tim Marx, counsel at Winthrop & Weinstine, will receive its Hendrickson Medal for Ethical Leadership at its Hendrickson Forum Friday, April 10.
After investing more than 40 years in public service, which included roles as president and CEO of Catholic Charities, commissioner of the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, and as city attorney and deputy mayor of Saint Paul, Marx returned to the practice of law. He joined Winthrop & Weinstine in 2022 as counsel in the firm’s housing, real estate, and government affairs/regulatory practices, where he continues to contribute to the community, including in nonprofit leadership.
He has spent his career pursuing efforts to strengthen his community and better the lives of thousands who are experiencing homelessness and poverty. He currently serves as vice chair of the board of directors for Fairview Health Services, as a board member of the Twin Cities Housing Alliance, and as housing advisor to the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation. He recently completed terms as vice-chair of the National Alliance to End Homelessness and as member of the Community Advisory Board for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He is also a founding sponsor and run mentor with Mile in My Shoes, a running club for those who have experienced homelessness.
In recognition of his dedicated service, he was named as a “Notable Nonprofit Board Member” by Twin Cities Business.
“Tim Marx believes in mission-driven leadership,” said Brother Robert Smith, FSC, Ph.D., senior vice president for university initiatives, special advisor to the president, and executive director of the Hendrickson Institute for Ethical Leadership. “This is a time when nonprofits, often struggling in this financial climate, need experienced, ethical leadership, and Tim Marx leads by example with more than four decades of servant leadership.
“We are so pleased to recognize and honor him for all that he has done to strengthen Minnesota, particularly the Twin Cities community, by improving the lives of thousands of individuals and families.”
Tami Diehm, president of Winthrop & Weinstine, said, “We are proud that Tim is receiving this recognition as an example of how community service is a core value of Winthrop & Weinstine.”
This year’s Hendrickson Forum will include the keynote address “Leading with Integrity: Overcoming the Moral Hazards of Leadership” with Joanne Ciulla, Ph.D., professor and director of the Institute for Ethical Leadership at Rutgers University Business School and a pioneer in the field of leadership ethics. Dr. Ciulla has written extensively on topics in business ethics and has earned numerous awards and honors for her work.
Once a year, during the Hendrickson Forum, Saint Mary’s brings an internationally recognized speaker to its Minneapolis Campus to engage Saint Mary’s faculty, staff, students and alumni, as well as the wider community, in timely and important conversations.
The forum on April 10 will be held from 11:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with check-in and networking beginning at 11 a.m. at the Saint Mary’s University Center at 2540 Park Ave. in Minneapolis. The event is open to the public and general admission tickets are $75 per person, which includes lunch. Advance registration is required. More information and online registration are available, starting Feb. 13, at smumn.edu/hendricksonforum.
