It was an eventful week in Cardinal athletics, featuring a senior day, season and home openers, and a full slate of games! And the excitement isn’t over, there’s still plenty of action to catch this week as well!

TENNIS RECAP

It was season-opening day for the Saint Mary’s tennis teams as they hosted Bethany Lutheran College last Saturday.

The men’s team battled hard but came up short in a 5-2 loss, with both points awarded by default. Meanwhile, the women’s team started their season strong with a dominant 7-0 sweep over the Vikings. This marks just the beginning of the season, as both teams will now take a break before returning to action on January 24, when they host Martin Luther.

MEN’S SOCCER SPLIT WEEK

The Saint Mary’s men’s soccer team battled through a pair of hard-fought matches last week, coming away with two draws against Simpson and Coe to remain unbeaten on the week. Dylan Goedderz had himself a week of scoring, netting his first career on Wednesday and then the equalizer on Saturday.

The team capped off the stretch by celebrating Senior Day, honoring the contributions of their graduating players.

The Cardinals turn their focus to the MIAC season, opening conference action on the road at Bethel this Wednesday, September 17, at 4:00 p.m., before returning home to host Augsburg on Saturday, September 20 at 1:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOCCER THREE GAME WEEK

The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team made the most of their lone matchup last week, earning an impressive 3-0 shutout victory, led by seniors Lauryn Skoruppa who netted two and Samantha Munson getting one over Wartburg on Wednesday. With momentum on their side, the Cardinals now shift their focus to the start of conference play, beginning with a trip to Bethel on Tuesday, September 16 for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.

They’ll then return home to face Augsburg on Saturday at 3:30 p.m., before hitting the road again for a nonconference matchup at Beloit on Sunday, September 21, at 1:00 p.m.

ROAD STREAK FOR VOLLEYBALL

The Saint Mary’s volleyball team wrapped up a challenging but competitive week, finishing with a 2-4 record, 6-7 overall. The Cardinals opened with a midweek split at the UW-La Crosse Triangular, falling to the host Eagles before bouncing back to defeat Luther.

Over the weekend, they traveled to Dubuque for the Loras/Dubuque Invite, where they went 1-3. Their highlight came in a thrilling five-set victory over Loras, powered by a season-high 25 kills from Brenna Bruchert. The Cardinals closed out the tournament with tough losses to UW-River Falls and No. 23-ranked Dubuque on Sunday.

Looking to bounce back, Saint Mary’s will head to New Ulm, Minnesota, on Saturday, September 20, for matches against Martin Luther and Bethany Lutheran at noon and 4:00 p.m.
