Action Alert: MN State Grant

Minnesota college students need our legislators’ help. The State Grant program, which provides need-based grants to two out of five Minnesota college students, faces a massive $240 million shortfall. Without action by our legislators, tens of thousands of students’ grants will be significantly cut or eliminated. This follows grant reductions that many students have already faced this academic year. You can read more about this problem on this website and at the Star Tribune.

State legislators can make all the difference. The Minnesota House and Senate can step up and invest in financial aid for students by filling the State Grant funding shortfall as they put together the state’s next two-year budget.

The budget that the Walz administration put forward earlier this session called for an increase in State Grant funding, which was welcome news. But that proposal would only fill 6.3 percent of the shortfall. Legislators can keep the state’s commitments to college students by completely filling the program’s budget shortfall.

Will Minnesota keep its commitment to college access and affordability? Help ensure Minnesota preserves that commitment; ask your legislators to fully fund the State Grant program.
