It was an action-packed week for Saint Mary’s athletics, and the Cardinals are eager to do it again!
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team (9-11) went 1-1 last week, losing to top-ranked Gustavus before securing a home victory over St. Scholastica. This week, the team will face two familiar opponents, hosting Augsburg (3-18) on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. before traveling to Carleton (3-18) on Saturday at 1:00 p.m., aiming to sweep both teams.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Cardinal men’s basketball team (6-15) had a challenging week, dropping two close games to Gustavus and Saint Scholastica. They will follow the same schedule as the women, playing at home on Wednesday against Augsburg (10-14), February 12th, at 7:30 p.m., before traveling to Carleton (14-7) for a 3:00 p.m. matchup.
The Cardinals defeated the Auggies earlier this season on the road and aim to repeat that performance at home. They’re also looking to avoid getting swept by the Knights on Saturday.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
It was a packed week for the women’s hockey team (14-6-0), with three games in a short span. They pushed No. 2 ranked UW-River Falls to overtime but ultimately came up short. They hosted Bethel, losing the first game, but bounced back on the road, splitting the series. The team will host St. Olaf (10-10-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. before traveling to the Oles Ice on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
The Oles are currently positioned in the middle of the conference and recently earned a two-game sweep against St. Scholastica.
MEN’S HOCKEY
The Saint Mary’s men’s hockey team (9-11-1) faced the second-ranked team in the conference this past weekend. The Cardinals fell to the Bethel Royals on Friday, but bounced back on Saturday with a dominant 4-1 victory over the Royals at home. The team will travel to St. Olaf (11-7-3) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday before returning home to take on the Oles at 7:05 p.m. on Saturday.
The win snapped a four game losing skid.
TENNIS
The Cardinal men’s and women’s tennis teams are on fire! The men’s team is riding a three-match win streak, while the women have extended theirs to five. Both teams were dominant, winning their home match against Crown with 7-0 victories on Friday and then securing 6-1 victories at Dubuque on Saturday.
The teams will host Edgewood College on Friday at 6:00 p.m. before heading to face the ranked Gusties of Gustavus on Saturday. The women’s match will begin at 12:30 p.m., followed by the men’s match at 3:30 p.m.
TRACK AND FIELD
The Saint Mary’s track and field teams traveled to UW-River Falls on Saturday for the UWRF Winter Classic, where several Cardinals had strong performances. A standout moment in this meet was the debut of the mixed 4x400m relay, marking the first time in Saint Mary’s history that athletes competed in a relay consisting of two women and two men per team, instead of all women or all men for all four legs of the race.
The team will head to Saint John’s University for the Saint John’s Invitational, which starts at 11:00 a.m.
SOFTBALL
Softball is back! The 2025 season kicks off this Saturday at 8:00 a.m. as the team competes in the Kwik Trip Invitational in Mankato at the Maverick Dome. They’ll play two doubleheaders on both Saturday and Sunday, facing off against Northwestern, Bethany Lutheran, Crown, and Nebraska Wesleyan.
Don’t miss a beat! Go Cardinals.
