WINONA, Minn. – The fall seasons have officially wrapped up and we are entering full winter sports mode. The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team is set to host two home games of a three game week. The men’s and women’s ice hockey teams each have a home game later in the week. The women’s basketball team will travel to Iowa for a two day tournament to start their season. It is the NCAA North Regional Championship this Saturday for the cross country teams as they look to send a few athletes to nationals.
Three Game Week for Men’s Basketball
The Cardinal men’s basketball team just notched their first win of the season with a seven point victory over Crown College on Saturday, November 9th. The Men look to host Martin Luther on Tuesday at 7 p.m. and host Bethany Lutheran on Thursday at 7 p.m. to round out the two game home stretch. The team will travel to take on Division I opponent University of Illinois Chicago on Saturday, November 16th at noon.
Historically, the Cardinals have never lost to Martin Luther and have won the last six match ups.
Bethany Lutheran is looking for their first win of the season after falling in their first two games of the year.
The Saint Mary’s men’s basketball team has never faced a DI opponent in the programs history and are looking to compete at the highest level. Looking to join the experience? There will be a post-game gathering at the Haymarket Pub & Brewery from 2p.m.-4p.m.
Women’s Hockey Split Weekend
The Saint Mary’s women’s hockey team will host game one of a two game series against conference opponent Hamline Pipers on Friday, November 15th for a 7 p.m. puck drop. The team will head to the cities on Saturday to face the Pipers in game two at 4 p.m.
The Pipers have a similar record as the Cardinals as they both as 2-1 on their early seasons.
The Cardinals recently took down 8th ranked UW-Eau Claire Blugolds in a 3-2 win on Tuesday, November 5th and are looking to build off a huge win.
Men’s Hockey Weekend Series
Coming off a two game loss, the Cardinals are hoping to bounce back on the ice this weekend facing their first conference opponent at Hamline on Friday, November 15th at 7 p.m. The team will then host the Pipers on Saturday for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop.
The Pipers are currently winless on the season recently falling 5-0 to UW-Stout, a team that the Cardinals were bested by in a close battle, 3-2 on Friday, November 8th.
Join the Saturday afternoon tailgate to celebrate the student homecoming week. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., $20 per person includes delicious food and beverages with a ticket to the men’s game. Food and games will be held in Gostomski Fieldhouse.
Season Opener For Women’s Basketball
The Saint Mary’s women’s basketball team is set to travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to play in the Cornell Classic this weekend facing the host team Cornell on Saturday, November 16th at 7 p.m. for their season opener. The Cardinals will turn around and play Coe College on Sunday for a 1 p.m. tip off time.
The Cardinals recently traveled to Rochester to take on Rochester Community Technical College for an exhibition match up before the regular season begins. Both Coe and Cornell have already had two games.
Cross Country Races at NCAA North Regional Championship
The Saint Mary’s cross country teams will travel to Northfield, Minnesota to race in the last meet of the season and the most competitive meet of the season on Saturday, November 16th. The women’s race is set to begin at 11 a.m. and the men will race at noon.
Maya Slavin of the women’s cross country team recorded MIAC Honorable Mention accolades.
Women’s Soccer Falls in MIAC Championship
Saint Mary’s forward Lauryn Skoruppa found the back of the net 31 minutes into the MIAC Championship game against the St. Catherine Wildcats. The Cardinals were held scoreless in the second half as the Wildcats scored three to take the title.
The Saint Mary’s women’s soccer team awaits the selection show in hopes for a post season tournament bid to the NCAA Tournament to keep their historic season alive. The 2024 NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Selection Show will air Monday, November 11th at 2 PM ET on NCAA.com.
