What Is a Phishing Kit?  A phishing kit is a collection of resources that cybercriminals use to craft convincing phishing attacks. These kits often include pre-designed phishing emails, web pages, malicious code, graphics, and more. Because these resources are readily available, cybercriminals don’t need extensive coding skills to launch an effective phishing attack.

What Makes Phishing Kits So Effective? Imagine receiving an email that states your PayPal account has been compromised. If that email consisted solely of text, lacking a header, images, or a footer, you would likely spot these red flags and question its legitimacy. However, if the email featured the official PayPal logo and included a footer with authentic PayPal contact information, your skepticism might diminish. If the link in the email directed you to a website that closely resembled the genuine PayPal site, you might not recognize it as a phishing attack, despite the deceptive appearance of authenticity.

Every resource that bolsters a phishing email enhances its credibility. While high-quality phishing scams usually require careful attention to detail, skill, and time, phishing kits enable any cybercriminal to quickly create a convincing scam with minimal effort.

Don’t fall for phishing kit scams! Follow the tips below to stay safe:

  • If you receive an email claiming you have an account issue, always go directly to that vendors’ website to log in.
  • Never click a link in an email that you weren’t expecting, even if the email includes logos or links that look official. Always think before you click.
  • Verify that urgent messages are legitimate before taking action. Contact the person or organization directly by using another line of communication.
