WINONA, Minn. – It is an exciting week in Cardinal athletics as we have two kick-off events for our winter sports seasons. Saint Mary’s will start the week with the annual Night in The Nest event hosted by the basketball teams on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. The women’s soccer team finishes their last non-conference game of the season Wednesday traveling to take on UW-River Falls at 4 p.m. Both hockey teams will open the season at home playing Concordia Wisconsin and Lake Forest on Friday, and hosting their annual Ice Breaker event Saturday. Saturday is a busy one with the cross country teams running in the MIAC Championships, both hockey’s hosting, men’s and women’s soccer at Hamline, and volleyball at Hamline.
NIGHT IN THE NEST
The men’s and women’s basketball teams will be showcasing their talents for the season in the Night In The Nest kick-off event on Tuesday, Oct. 29th at 8:30 p.m. in the Saint Mary’s gym. Come join the teams as they will play multiple mini competitive games, interactive contests, and more. Cardinal merch, pizza, and popcorn will be available while they put on a show.
Hockey Ice Breaker Event
The men’s and women’s hockey teams will be playing two non-conference teams Friday, starting at 2 p.m. as the women take on Concordia Wisconsin and the men play Lake Forest to follow at 7:05 p.m. On Saturday, the teams will host the annual Ice Breaker Event for parent’s weekend where you can find activities around the venue between the two games. Women are to play at noon and the men to play at 4 p.m. Kids will be able to skate with the teams after the men’s game.
Volleyball Road Contests
The Cardinal volleyball team is on the road for their 18th and 19th road games of the season. On Friday, Nov. 1st they travel to Bethel for a 7 p.m. match. On Saturday, Nov. 2nd they will play Hamline in St. Paul for another late, 7 p.m. game.
Bethel is one of the top teams in the conference as they are 7-1 in MIAC action. The Cardinals have fallen to the bottom of the conference over the weekend as they fell to St. Scholastica on Saturday and solid St. Kates team Friday.
The Hamline Pipers have one win in conference against Concordia but is currently on a six game losing streak, similar to the Cardinals.
MIAC Championship Race
The cross country team is rounding off their season as they will compete in one of the most important meets in the season, the MIAC Championship race hosted by St. Olaf on Saturday, Nov. 1st in the morning.
Men’s Soccer Final Match
The Cardinal men’s soccer team will play in their final game of the season Saturday as they travel to the Cities to take on Hamline to cap of their season. The team will take the pitch for a 3:30 p.m. match up.
The Pipers are 4-5 in conference and most recently losing to Macalester by five goals. The Cardinals just hosted the Macalester Scots and fell by just one goal.
Women’s Regular Season Wind Down
The women’s soccer team, who is having an incredible season, will finish regular season action taking on the Falcons of River Falls on Wednesday for an afternoon game at 4 p.m. before traveling to Hamline for a 1 p.m. game in the cities on Saturday.
The Falcons are just 2-4 in conference and had lost two Carleton recently by two goals. The Cardinals just hosted the Knights on Saturday and that game ended in a draw.
The Pipers are one of the bottom teams in the conference sitting at 1-6-3 and currently on a three game losing streak.
It is that time of the year where the fall and winter season collide and there is so much action to catch. We wish the Cardinals the best of luck in their contests and safe travels to all who are making the trip. Go Cardinals!
