The Saint Mary’s University athletic teams continue competition this week, with two teams at home this week and one on the road Saturday. Women’s soccer is at home against Gustavus on Wednesday and again Sunday against UW-Stevens Point. Volleyball  begins MIAC play Friday night at home against Gustavus and travels to Moorhead Sunday afternoon. The men’s soccer team is on the road for one game this week on Saturday at Saint Johns slatted for 3:30 p.m.

Two Home Events for Women’s Soccer

The Cardinal women’s soccer team is hosting two games this week at the Och as they will be completing against one conference team and rounding out one of the last non-conference games. The Cardinals are coming off a recent tie with Augsburg and a loss to St. Catherine, both tie knit games. They are now 3-2-2 on the season looking to turn a few ties into wins this week. It is a busy week for the team as they also will be traveling to Saint Benedict for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday.

Gustavus has an identical record as the Cardinals and are coming off two loses, one to Carleton and the other to Macalester. Each was only by a goal. Both teams are looking to take the game Wednesday as they begin conference play.

Saint Benedict is looking to turn a few of their games into wins as well. They have tied the last four games they have played giving them a 3-1-4 record. They have beat UW- Stevens Point by a goal and most recently tied Wartburg. The Cardinals beat Wartburg and will match up with the Pointers the next day.

The Pointers have played two more games than the Cardinals and have a record of 3-4-2 in the season. A few key games that can compare the two include how Stevens Point lost two Wartburg whereas the Cardinals beat the Knights and both teams lost to St. Catherine. It should be an even match up, historically, the Pointers have two games over the Cardinals in the 15 times they met.

Volleyball Hosts MIAC Opener

The team will host Gustavus on Friday night at 7 p.m. before traveling to Moorhead for a 2:30 p.m. start on Sunday. The Cardinals are 9-7 on the season coming off one of the last tournaments of the season in La Crosse.

The Cardinals are hosting their first true home game against a nationally ranked Gustavus team Friday as it is the first MIAC game for the team. Gustavus is 7-7 on the season and have lost the last five of six games to other ranked opponents. The young Saint Mary’s team has been playing well with two Cardinals reaching milestones last week. Brenna Bruchert surpassed 500 career kills and Kali Olson notching her 100th career block.

Concordia Moorhead is the next game of the weekend for the Cardinals as the Cobbers are hungry for their first win of the season, they are 0-13. Neither team has played a similar opponent to compare but historically, the Cobbers have beat the Cardinals with over 10 games on them.

Men’s Soccer Heads to Saint Johns

The Soccer team is looking to get back on track after dropping their last three games in close matches after having a historic 5-0 start. The team has one game this week to prepare for. The Cardinals will head to Collegeville, Minnesota for an afternoon start against Saint John’s University.

The Johnies have not played as many games as the Cardinals with a 2-3 record compared to the Cardinals 5-3 record. The Cardinals have lost the last three match ups to the Johnies but the Cardinals are determined to get this next match up.

The athletics department is looking forward to a fun parents weekend on campus and wishes all that are making the trip safe travels!
