Welcome new MFT Program Director, Dr. Kimmery Newsom!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Kimmery Newsom, PhD, LMFT, as the new Program Director for the M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy Program on the Minneapolis campus! 
 
Dr. Kimmery Newsom grew up in Nashville, TN and studied at Kansas State University, where she completed a BS in psychology in 2004, MS in Marriage and family therapy in 2006, and a Ph.D. in Family Studies in 2013. Dr. Newsom taught at Kansas State University and University of Wisconsin-Stout. She is licensed clinically/independently as a marriage and family therapist in KS, MN, and WI. She has been an educator in the college classroom for about 15 years and has been working with individuals and couples for about 19 years.

In addition to her work as a professor and Marriage and Family Therapist, Dr. Newsom is an American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Approved Supervisor Candidate, a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE), and a certified sex addiction treatment provider (CSATP). Her areas of focus for therapy include but are not limited to, trauma, sexual trauma, relationship dynamics, depression, anxiety, sex addiction, cultural issues related to racism and discrimination in society. She has published articles and completed numerous national and international presentations in the research areas of diversity, equity and inclusion and trauma and resilience from sexual abuse.

Dr. Newsom is the first author of a textbook that is scheduled to release its second edition in August 2024 entitled Cultural Diversity in Family Life Education. Dr. Newsom is a speaker and trainer on issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion in society. She moved to the Twin Cities in 2021 after living in KS for 17 years and WI for 4 years. Dr. Newsom enjoys time with her children and her partner and traveling.
